Revenues Working Against Glencore plc's (LON:GLEN) Share Price Following 26% Dive

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Glencore plc (LON:GLEN) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 48% share price drop.

Following the heavy fall in price, Glencore may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in the United Kingdom have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 9x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Glencore's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times haven't been great for Glencore as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Glencore?

Glencore's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 6.0% gain to the company's revenues. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 13% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 0.1% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 16% growth per year, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Glencore's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Final Word

The southerly movements of Glencore's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

It's clear to see that Glencore maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Glencore's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Glencore (1 can't be ignored!) that you need to be mindful of.
