Legal & General Group Plc (LON:LGEN) Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing
When close to half the companies in the United Kingdom have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 16x, you may consider Legal & General Group Plc (LON:LGEN) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 31.3x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Legal & General Group's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Legal & General Group would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 43%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 67% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 51% per year as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 15% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Legal & General Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Legal & General Group's P/E
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Legal & General Group maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Legal & General Group (at least 1 which is significant), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
