Investors Don't See Light At End Of Totally plc's (LON:TLY) Tunnel And Push Stock Down 27%
Totally plc (LON:TLY) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 27% share price drop in the last month. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 11% in the last year.
Following the heavy fall in price, it would be understandable if you think Totally is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.1x, considering almost half the companies in the United Kingdom's Healthcare industry have P/S ratios above 1.2x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Totally Performed Recently?
Totally could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Totally's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 24%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 24% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 2.8% as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 10%.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Totally's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What Does Totally's P/S Mean For Investors?
Totally's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Healthcare companies. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Totally's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
