It is a pleasure to report that the Hunting PLC (LON:HTG) is up 35% in the last quarter. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 60% in the last three years. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. After all, could be that the fall was overdone.

Given that Hunting didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

In the last three years, Hunting saw its revenue grow by 13% per year, compound. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. That contrasts with the weak share price, which has fallen 17% compounded, over three years. To be frank we're surprised to see revenue growth and share price growth diverge so strongly. It would be well worth taking a closer look at the company, to determine growth trends (and balance sheet strength).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 1.6% in the twelve months, Hunting shareholders did even worse, losing 19% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 3% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Hunting , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
