What You Need To Know About S&U plc's (LON:SUS) Investor Composition
The big shareholder groups in S&U plc (LON:SUS) have power over the company. Institutions often own shares in more established companies, while it's not unusual to see insiders own a fair bit of smaller companies. Warren Buffett said that he likes "a business with enduring competitive advantages that is run by able and owner-oriented people." So it's nice to see some insider ownership, because it may suggest that management is owner-oriented.
S&U is not a large company by global standards. It has a market capitalization of UK£227m, which means it wouldn't have the attention of many institutional investors. What Does The Institutional Ownership Tell Us About S&U?
Institutions typically measure themselves against a benchmark when reporting to their own investors, so they often become more enthusiastic about a stock once it's included in a major index. We would expect most companies to have some institutions on the register, especially if they are growing.
We can see that S&U does have institutional investors; and they hold a good portion of the company's stock. This can indicate that the company has a certain degree of credibility in the investment community. However, it is best to be wary of relying on the supposed validation that comes with institutional investors. They too, get it wrong sometimes. It is not uncommon to see a big share price drop if two large institutional investors try to sell out of a stock at the same time. So it is worth checking the past earnings trajectory of S&U, (below). Of course, keep in mind that there are other factors to consider, too.
We note that hedge funds don't have a meaningful investment in S&U. Looking at our data, we can see that the largest shareholder is Wiseheights Limited with 20% of shares outstanding. For context, the second largest shareholder holds about 14% of the shares outstanding, followed by an ownership of 13% by the third-largest shareholder. Graham Derek Coombs, who is the third-largest shareholder, also happens to hold the title of Vice Chairman. Additionally, the company's CEO Anthony Michael Coombs directly holds 11% of the total shares outstanding.
On looking further, we found that 58% of the shares are owned by the top 4 shareholders. In other words, these shareholders have a meaningful say in the decisions of the company.
While studying institutional ownership for a company can add value to your research, it is also a good practice to research analyst recommendations to get a deeper understand of a stock's expected performance. There are a reasonable number of analysts covering the stock, so it might be useful to find out their aggregate view on the future.
Insider Ownership Of S&U
The definition of an insider can differ slightly between different countries, but members of the board of directors always count. Management ultimately answers to the board. However, it is not uncommon for managers to be executive board members, especially if they are a founder or the CEO.
Most consider insider ownership a positive because it can indicate the board is well aligned with other shareholders. However, on some occasions too much power is concentrated within this group.
Our most recent data indicates that insiders own a reasonable proportion of S&U plc. Insiders own UK£101m worth of shares in the UK£227m company. This may suggest that the founders still own a lot of shares. You can click here to see if they have been buying or selling.

If related parties, such as insiders, have an interest in one of these private companies, that should be disclosed in the annual report.
