Caledonia Investments (LON:CLDN) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At £0.5391
Caledonia Investments Plc (LON:CLDN) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 7th of August to £0.5391. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 2.0% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. The last payment was quite easily covered by earnings, but it made up 241% of cash flows. The company might be more focused on returning cash to shareholders, but paying out this much of its cash flow could expose the dividend to being cut in the future.
Looking forward, EPS could fall by 4.7% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could be 64%, which we are pretty comfortable with and we think is feasible on an earnings basis.

Caledonia Investments Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from £0.491 total annually to £0.736. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 4.1% over that duration. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.
Caledonia Investments May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. However, things aren't all that rosy. Caledonia Investments has seen earnings per share falling at 4.7% per year over the last five years. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Caledonia Investments will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
