We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in AJ Bell plc (LON:AJB).

What Is Insider Buying?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

AJ Bell Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CEO, Member of the Management Board & Director, Andrew Bell, for UK£7.8m worth of shares, at about UK£4.38 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of UK£4.08. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

In total, AJ Bell insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. They sold for an average price of about UK£4.43. It's not particularly great to see insiders were selling shares at below recent prices. But we wouldn't put too much weight on the insider selling. Insider Ownership of AJ Bell

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that AJ Bell insiders own 28% of the company, worth about UK£460m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
