Possible Bearish Signals With RELX Insiders Disposing Stock
Many RELX PLC (LON:REL) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

RELX Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The CEO & Executive Director, Erik Engstrom, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£11m worth of shares at a price of UK£34.02 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of UK£37.75, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 22% of Erik Engstrom's stake.
In the last twelve months insiders purchased 3.03k shares for UK£102k. But insiders sold 540.62k shares worth UK£18m. All up, insiders sold more shares in RELX than they bought, over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 0.1% of RELX shares, worth about UK£74m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
So What Do The RELX Insider Transactions Indicate?
The fact that there have been no RELX insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. Still, the insider transactions at RELX in the last 12 months are not very heartening. But it's good to see that insiders own shares in the company. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
