Travis Perkins plc's (LON:TPK) Business And Shares Still Trailing The Market
Travis Perkins plc's (LON:TPK) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.9x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United Kingdom, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 16x and even P/E's above 29x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Recent times haven't been advantageous for Travis Perkins as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Travis Perkins' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. Is There Any Growth For Travis Perkins?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Travis Perkins' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 38%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 522% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 1.9% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 12% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Travis Perkins' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Travis Perkins' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Travis Perkins you should know about.
