Over the past year, many Chemring Group PLC (LON:CHG) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Chemring Group

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Group Chief Executive & Director, Michael Ord, sold UK£669k worth of shares at a price of UK£3.49 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of UK£3.60, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 29% of Michael Ord's holding.
