Returns At Egide (EPA:ALGID) Are On The Way Up

If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So on that note, Egide (EPA:ALGID) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Egide:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.026 = €282k ÷ (€28m - €17m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).

Therefore, Egide has an ROCE of 2.6%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Electronic industry average of 6.6%.

So How Is Egide's ROCE Trending?

It's great to see that Egide has started to generate some pre-tax earnings from prior investments. The company was generating losses five years ago, but now it's turned around, earning 2.6% which is no doubt a relief for some early shareholders. At first glance, it seems the business is getting more proficient at generating returns, because over the same period, the amount of capital employed has reduced by 29%. This could potentially mean that the company is selling some of its assets.

For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. The current liabilities has increased to 61% of total assets, so the business is now more funded by the likes of its suppliers or short-term creditors. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.

The Key Takeaway

In summary, it's great to see that Egide has been able to turn things around and earn higher returns on lower amounts of capital. And since the stock has dived 71% over the last five years, there may be other factors affecting the company's prospects. Still, it's worth doing some further research to see if the trends will continue into the future.
