These Metrics Don't Make Graines Voltz (EPA:GRVO) Look Too Strong

Ignoring the stock price of a company, what are the underlying trends that tell us a business is past the growth phase? More often than not, we'll see a declining return on capital employed (ROCE) and a declining amount of capital employed. Basically the company is earning less on its investments and it is also reducing its total assets. And from a first read, things don't look too good at Graines Voltz (EPA:GRVO), so let's see why.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Graines Voltz is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.14 = €6.7m ÷ (€87m - €39m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).

Thus, Graines Voltz has an ROCE of 14%. In isolation, that's a pretty standard return but against the Retail Distributors industry average of 18%, it's not as good.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

We are a bit worried about the trend of returns on capital at Graines Voltz. About five years ago, returns on capital were 21%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. Meanwhile, capital employed in the business has stayed roughly the flat over the period. Companies that exhibit these attributes tend to not be shrinking, but they can be mature and facing pressure on their margins from competition. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect Graines Voltz to turn into a multi-bagger.

On a separate but related note, it's important to know that Graines Voltz has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 45%, which we'd consider pretty high. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.

The Key Takeaway

In summary, it's unfortunate that Graines Voltz is generating lower returns from the same amount of capital. The market must be rosy on the stock's future because even though the underlying trends aren't too encouraging, the stock has soared 723%. In any case, the current underlying trends don't bode well for long term performance so unless they reverse, we'd start looking elsewhere.
