There's No Escaping Solocal Group S.A.'s (EPA:LOCAL) Muted Revenues Despite A 26% Share Price Rise

Those holding Solocal Group S.A. (EPA:LOCAL) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 26% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 97% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in France's Interactive Media and Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 3.3x, you may still consider Solocal Group as a highly attractive investment with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Solocal Group Has Been Performing

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Solocal Group's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Solocal Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 12%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 20% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 1.9% during the coming year according to the dual analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 9.7%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why Solocal Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

Solocal Group's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Solocal Group maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
