Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. As with many other companies Visiomed Group SA (EPA:ALVMG) makes use of debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

What Is Visiomed Group's Debt?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of December 2022 Visiomed Group had €5.62m of debt, an increase on €4.95m, over one year. However, because it has a cash reserve of €2.36m, its net debt is less, at about €3.26m.
A Look At Visiomed Group's Liabilities
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Visiomed Group had liabilities of €9.70m falling due within a year, and liabilities of €2.12m due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of €2.36m and €3.98m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total €5.47m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
Given Visiomed Group has a market capitalization of €141.8m, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. However, we do think it is worth keeping an eye on its balance sheet strength, as it may change over time. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since Visiomed Group will need earnings to service that debt. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
In the last year Visiomed Group wasn't profitable at an EBIT level, but managed to grow its revenue by 101%, to €14m. So its pretty obvious shareholders are hoping for more growth!
Caveat Emptor
Even though Visiomed Group managed to grow its top line quite deftly, the cold hard truth is that it is losing money on the EBIT line. Indeed, it lost €4.1m at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. Another cause for caution is that is bled €7.3m in negative free cash flow over the last twelve months. So in short it's a really risky stock. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. These risks can be hard to spot. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Visiomed Group (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
