Shareholders in Orion Oyj (HEL:ORNBV) may be thrilled to learn that the analysts have just delivered a major upgrade to their near-term forecasts. The analysts greatly increased their revenue estimates, suggesting a stark improvement in business fundamentals.

Following the upgrade, the latest consensus from Orion Oyj's seven analysts is for revenues of €1.2b in 2022, which would reflect a notable 14% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Per-share earnings are expected to surge 93% to €2.77. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of €1.1b and earnings per share (EPS) of €1.44 in 2022. So we can see there's been a pretty clear increase in analyst sentiment in recent times, with both revenues and earnings per share receiving a decent lift in the latest estimates.

It will come as no surprise to learn that the analysts have increased their price target for Orion Oyj 6.1% to €42.24 on the back of these upgrades. It could also be instructive to look at the range of analyst estimates, to evaluate how different the outlier opinions are from the mean. The most optimistic Orion Oyj analyst has a price target of €52.00 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at €27.00. This shows there is still some diversity in estimates, but analysts don't appear to be totally split on the stock as though it might be a success or failure situation.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. It's clear from the latest estimates that Orion Oyj's rate of growth is expected to accelerate meaningfully, with the forecast 30% annualised revenue growth to the end of 2022 noticeably faster than its historical growth of 0.9% p.a. over the past five years. Compare this with other companies in the same industry, which are forecast to grow their revenue 5.7% annually. It seems obvious that, while the growth outlook is brighter than the recent past, the analysts also expect Orion Oyj to grow faster than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away from this upgrade is that analysts upgraded their earnings per share estimates for this year, expecting improving business conditions. Fortunately, analysts also upgraded their revenue estimates, and our data indicates sales are expected to perform better than the wider market. Given that the consensus looks almost universally bullish, with a substantial increase to forecasts and a higher price target, Orion Oyj could be worth investigating further.

Using these estimates as a starting point, we've run a discounted cash flow calculation (DCF) on Orion Oyj that suggests the company could be somewhat undervalued. For more information, you can click through to our platform to learn more about our valuation approach.
