CapMan Oyj's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 100% of what it was earning. It will be difficult to sustain this level of payout so we wouldn't be confident about this continuing.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 65.2%. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 67% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.

CapMan Oyj Is Still Building Its Track Record

Even though the company has been paying a consistent dividend for a while, we would like to see a few more years before we feel comfortable relying on it. The annual payment during the last 9 years was €0.04 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.17. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 17% a year over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.

CapMan Oyj Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. It's encouraging to see that CapMan Oyj has been growing its earnings per share at 21% a year over the past five years. EPS has been growing well, but CapMan Oyj has been paying out a massive proportion of its earnings, which can make the dividend tough to maintain.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think CapMan Oyj will make a great income stock. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
