A week ago, Cargotec Corporation (HEL:CGCBV) came out with a strong set of quarterly numbers that could potentially lead to a re-rate of the stock. The company beat forecasts, with revenue of €1.1b, some 7.3% above estimates, and statutory earnings per share (EPS) coming in at €1.26, 91% ahead of expectations. Earnings are an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance, look at what the analysts are forecasting for next year, and see if there's been a change in sentiment towards the company. So we collected the latest post-earnings statutory consensus estimates to see what could be in store for next year.

Taking into account the latest results, the five analysts covering Cargotec provided consensus estimates of €4.16b revenue in 2024, which would reflect a chunky 9.6% decline over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are expected to tumble 21% to €4.53 in the same period. Before this earnings report, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of €4.12b and earnings per share (EPS) of €3.91 in 2024. There was no real change to the revenue estimates, but the analysts do seem more bullish on earnings, given the substantial gain in earnings per share expectations following these results.

The consensus price target rose 6.0% to €74.20, suggesting that higher earnings estimates flow through to the stock's valuation as well. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. There are some variant perceptions on Cargotec, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at €88.00 and the most bearish at €62.00 per share. There are definitely some different views on the stock, but the range of estimates is not wide enough as to imply that the situation is unforecastable, in our view.

These estimates are interesting, but it can be useful to paint some more broad strokes when seeing how forecasts compare, both to the Cargotec's past performance and to peers in the same industry. These estimates imply that revenue is expected to slow, with a forecast annualised decline of 13% by the end of 2024. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 5.0% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 3.6% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Cargotec is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing here is that the analysts upgraded their earnings per share estimates, suggesting that there has been a clear increase in optimism towards Cargotec following these results. Fortunately, the analysts also reconfirmed their revenue estimates, suggesting that it's tracking in line with expectations. Although our data does suggest that Cargotec's revenue is expected to perform worse than the wider industry. We note an upgrade to the price target, suggesting that the analysts believes the intrinsic value of the business is likely to improve over time.

Following on from that line of thought, we think that the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Cargotec going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here..
