Iberdrola's (BME:IBE) Dividend Will Be €0.2025

The board of Iberdrola, S.A. (BME:IBE) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 26th of January, with investors receiving €0.2025 per share. The payment will take the dividend yield to 3.8%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Iberdrola's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Prior to this announcement, Iberdrola's dividend was making up a very large proportion of earnings and perhaps more concerning was that it was 107% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows certainly exposes the company to cutting the dividend if cash flows were to reduce.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 40.2%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 56%, which would make us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend, despite the levels currently being quite high.

Iberdrola Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The dividend has gone from an annual total of €0.03 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of €0.659. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 36% a year over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.

Iberdrola Could Grow Its Dividend

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. We are encouraged to see that Iberdrola has grown earnings per share at 8.4% per year over the past five years. Past earnings growth has been decent, but unless this is one of those rare businesses that can grow without additional capital investment or marketing spend, we'd generally expect the higher payout ratio to limit its future growth prospects.

Our Thoughts On Iberdrola's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. In the past the payments have been stable, but we think the company is paying out too much for this to continue for the long term. We don't think Iberdrola is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
