Read This Before Considering Matas A/S (CPH:MATAS) For Its Upcoming kr.2.00 Dividend
Matas A/S (CPH:MATAS) stock is about to trade ex-dividend in 4 days. The ex-dividend date occurs one day before the record date which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Thus, you can purchase Matas' shares before the 20th of June in order to receive the dividend, which the company will pay on the 24th of June.
The company's next dividend payment will be kr.2.00 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of kr.2.00 to shareholders. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Matas has a trailing yield of 1.7% on the current stock price of kr.118.40. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

If a company pays out more in dividends than it earned, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. That's why it's good to see Matas paying out a modest 45% of its earnings. Yet cash flows are even more important than profits for assessing a dividend, so we need to see if the company generated enough cash to pay its distribution. Fortunately, it paid out only 32% of its free cash flow in the past year.
It's encouraging to see that the dividend is covered by both profit and cash flow. This generally suggests the dividend is sustainable, as long as earnings don't drop precipitously.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?
When earnings decline, dividend companies become much harder to analyse and own safely. If earnings fall far enough, the company could be forced to cut its dividend. Matas's earnings per share have fallen at approximately 8.5% a year over the previous five years. Ultimately, when earnings per share decline, the size of the pie from which dividends can be paid, shrinks.
Many investors will assess a company's dividend performance by evaluating how much the dividend payments have changed over time. Matas has seen its dividend decline 9.6% per annum on average over the past 10 years, which is not great to see. While it's not great that earnings and dividends per share have fallen in recent years, we're encouraged by the fact that management has trimmed the dividend rather than risk over-committing the company in a risky attempt to maintain yields to shareholders.
To Sum It Up
Should investors buy Matas for the upcoming dividend? Matas has comfortably low cash and profit payout ratios, which may mean the dividend is sustainable even in the face of a sharp decline in earnings per share. Still, we consider declining earnings to be a warning sign. In summary, it's hard to get excited about Matas from a dividend perspective.
While it's tempting to invest in Matas for the dividends alone, you should always be mindful of the risks involved. Our analysis shows 4 warning signs for Matas and you should be aware of them before buying any shares.
