The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. Importantly, Movinn A/S (CPH:MOVINN) does carry debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

What Is Movinn's Debt?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that Movinn had kr.21.6m of debt in June 2024, down from kr.24.8m, one year before. However, it also had kr.4.92m in cash, and so its net debt is kr.16.7m.
How Strong Is Movinn's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, Movinn had liabilities of kr.11.9m due within 12 months, and liabilities of kr.19.4m due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of kr.4.92m and kr.4.21m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling kr.22.2m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Movinn has a market capitalization of kr.61.6m, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is Movinn's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
Over 12 months, Movinn reported revenue of kr.86m, which is a gain of 7.0%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. That rate of growth is a bit slow for our taste, but it takes all types to make a world.
Caveat Emptor
Over the last twelve months Movinn produced an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at kr.4.7m. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through kr.3.5m of cash over the last year. So in short it's a really risky stock. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. We've identified 4 warning signs with Movinn , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
