Some innoscripta SE (ETR:1INN) Shareholders Look For Exit As Shares Take 25% Pounding

The innoscripta SE (ETR:1INN) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, given around half the companies in Germany have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may still consider innoscripta as a stock to potentially avoid with its 24.9x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

innoscripta certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For innoscripta?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as innoscripta's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 92%. Still, incredibly EPS has fallen 98% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 25% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we find it concerning that innoscripta is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On innoscripta's P/E

innoscripta's P/E hasn't come down all the way after its stock plunged. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of innoscripta revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. When we see earnings heading backwards and underperforming the market forecasts, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

The company's balance sheet is another key area for risk analysis. Take a look at our free balance sheet analysis for innoscripta with six simple checks on some of these key factors.
