Returns On Capital At Infineon Technologies (ETR:IFX) Have Stalled

If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. That's why when we briefly looked at Infineon Technologies' (ETR:IFX) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Infineon Technologies is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.13 = €3.0b ÷ (€29b - €5.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

Therefore, Infineon Technologies has an ROCE of 13%. That's a pretty standard return and it's in line with the industry average of 13%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Infineon Technologies Tell Us?

While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. The company has consistently earned 13% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 107% in that time. 13% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that Infineon Technologies has consistently earned this amount. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.

The Bottom Line On Infineon Technologies' ROCE

In the end, Infineon Technologies has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return.
