Earnings Working Against Knaus Tabbert AG's (ETR:KTA) Share Price Following 30% Dive

Knaus Tabbert AG (ETR:KTA) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 30% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 48% in that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, Knaus Tabbert may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 4.3x, since almost half of all companies in Germany have P/E ratios greater than 16x and even P/E's higher than 30x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

Knaus Tabbert could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Knaus Tabbert?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Knaus Tabbert's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 10%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 47% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 14% per annum during the coming three years according to the five analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 15% each year.

In light of this, it's understandable that Knaus Tabbert's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

The Key Takeaway

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Knaus Tabbert's share price has pulled its P/E way down as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Knaus Tabbert maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Having said that, be aware Knaus Tabbert is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those are significant.
