Logicom (CSE:LOG) jumps 11% this week, though earnings growth is still tracking behind five-year shareholder returns
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For instance, the price of Logicom Public Limited (CSE:LOG) stock is up an impressive 146% over the last five years. And in the last month, the share price has gained 26%. But the price may well have benefitted from a buoyant market, since stocks have gained 16% in the last thirty days.
Since it's been a strong week for Logicom shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, Logicom achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 15% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 20% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Logicom the TSR over the last 5 years was 210%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Logicom's TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 61%. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 25% per year. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Logicom you should know about.
