Further weakness as Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group (SHSE:600804) drops 13% this week, taking five-year losses to 80%
We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. For example, we sympathize with anyone who was caught holding Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600804) during the five years that saw its share price drop a whopping 80%. And it's not just long term holders hurting, because the stock is down 49% in the last year. Furthermore, it's down 26% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.
With the stock having lost 13% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.
Check out our latest analysis for Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group
Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.
Over half a decade Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 21% for each year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. So it's not altogether surprising to see the share price down 12% per year in the same time period. This kind of price performance makes us very wary, especially when combined with falling revenue. Ironically, that behavior could create an opportunity for the contrarian investor - but only if there are good reasons to predict a brighter future.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 14% in the last year, Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group shareholders lost 49%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 12% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
