Chempartner Pharmatech Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300149) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 29% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 50% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, Chempartner Pharmatech's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.2x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 7.3x and even P/S above 12x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Chempartner Pharmatech's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Chempartner Pharmatech over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Chempartner Pharmatech's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 22%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 21% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 162% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's understandable that Chempartner Pharmatech's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Bottom Line On Chempartner Pharmatech's P/S

Shares in Chempartner Pharmatech have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Chempartner Pharmatech confirms that the company's shrinking revenue over the past medium-term is a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, given the industry is projected to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
