Zooming In On Beijing Succeeder Technology's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Beijing Succeeder Technology has an accrual ratio of 0.47 for the year to March 2024. Statistically speaking, that's a real negative for future earnings. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. Even though it reported a profit of CNÂ¥120.8m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through CNÂ¥20m in the last year. We saw that FCF was CNÂ¥15m a year ago though, so Beijing Succeeder Technology has at least been able to generate positive FCF in the past.

Our Take On Beijing Succeeder Technology's Profit Performance
As we have made quite clear, we're a bit worried that Beijing Succeeder Technology didn't back up the last year's profit with free cashflow. For this reason, we think that Beijing Succeeder Technology's statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. But at least holders can take some solace from the 31% per annum growth in EPS for the last three. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Beijing Succeeder Technology at this point in time.
