The Market Lifts Risuntek Inc. (SZSE:002981) Shares 25% But It Can Do More

Despite an already strong run, Risuntek Inc. (SZSE:002981) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 25% in the last thirty days. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 3.5% isn't as impressive.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 36x, you may still consider Risuntek as an attractive investment with its 32.1x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

Earnings have risen firmly for Risuntek recently, which is pleasing to see. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this respectable earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Risuntek's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Risuntek would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 22%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 820% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 39% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Risuntek's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Despite Risuntek's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of Risuntek revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.

You always need to take note of risks, for example - Risuntek has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
