Investors push A-Zenith Home Furnishings (SHSE:603389) 11% lower this week, company's increasing losses might be to blame
A-Zenith Home Furnishings Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603389) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 19% in the last quarter. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 24%, less than the market return of 32%.
While the stock has fallen 11% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.
Because A-Zenith Home Furnishings made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.
Over the last half decade A-Zenith Home Furnishings' revenue has actually been trending down at about 13% per year. Even though revenue hasn't increased, the stock actually gained 4%, per year, during the same period. It's probably worth checking other factors such as the profitability, to try to understand the share price action. It may not be reflecting the revenue.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 16% in the last year, A-Zenith Home Furnishings shareholders lost 23%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
