Beijing Career International's (SZSE:300662) earnings have declined over three years, contributing to shareholders 62% loss
Beijing Career International Co., Ltd (SZSE:300662) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 59% in the last quarter. But that is small recompense for the exasperating returns over three years. In that time, the share price dropped 63%. So it is really good to see an improvement. While many would remain nervous, there could be further gains if the business can put its best foot forward.
While the last three years has been tough for Beijing Career International shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Beijing Career International saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 11% per year, over the last three years. This reduction in EPS is slower than the 28% annual reduction in the share price. So it's likely that the EPS decline has disappointed the market, leaving investors hesitant to buy.

A Different Perspective
Beijing Career International shareholders are down 27% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 11%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 4% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Beijing Career International (at least 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
