FESCO Group Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600861) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 28% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 31% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 29x, you may still consider FESCO Group as a highly attractive investment with its 12.8x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times have been pleasing for FESCO Group as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For FESCO Group?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like FESCO Group's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 36%. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 13% each year during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. With the market predicted to deliver 19% growth per year, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that FESCO Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Final Word

FESCO Group's recent share price jump still sees its P/E sitting firmly flat on the ground. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that FESCO Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
