Investors more bullish on Jinlongyu Group (SZSE:002882) this week as stock lifts 5.2%, despite earnings trending downwards over past five years
When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. To wit, the Jinlongyu Group share price has climbed 82% in five years, easily topping the market return of 25% (ignoring dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 21%, including dividends.
Since it's been a strong week for Jinlongyu Group shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Jinlongyu Group's earnings per share are down 16% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
We doubt the modest 1.1% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. We are not particularly impressed by the annual compound revenue growth of 2.5% over five years. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Jinlongyu Group the TSR over the last 5 years was 103%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Jinlongyu Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 21% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 15% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Jinlongyu Group better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
