CAP S.A.'s (SNSE:CAP) Shares Not Telling The Full Story

There wouldn't be many who think CAP S.A.'s (SNSE:CAP) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Metals and Mining industry in Chile is very similar. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has CAP Performed Recently?

CAP could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For CAP?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, CAP would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 3.2%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 42% overall drop in revenue. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 16% over the next year. With the industry only predicted to deliver 3.8%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that CAP's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From CAP's P/S?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Looking at CAP's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. When we see a strong revenue outlook, with growth outpacing the industry, we can only assume potential uncertainty around these figures are what might be placing slight pressure on the P/S ratio. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.

Having said that, be aware CAP is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
