Ypsomed Holding (VTX:YPSN) jumps 5.6% this week, though earnings growth is still tracking behind five-year shareholder returns
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For example, the Ypsomed Holding AG (VTX:YPSN) share price has soared 183% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. In the last week the share price is up 5.6%.
Since it's been a strong week for Ypsomed Holding shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, Ypsomed Holding managed to grow its earnings per share at 43% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 23% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company. Of course, with a P/E ratio of 64.22, the market remains optimistic.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It is of course excellent to see how Ypsomed Holding has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. Take a more thorough look at Ypsomed Holding's financial health with this free report on its balance sheet.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Ypsomed Holding the TSR over the last 5 years was 191%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Ypsomed Holding had a tough year, with a total loss of 2.2% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 12%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 24% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
