Orell Füssli's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, Orell Füssli's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to fall by 16.5%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 76%, which is definitely on the higher side.
Orell Füssli's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
It's comforting to see that Orell Füssli has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. Since 2016, the annual payment back then was CHF2.80, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CHF3.90. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 4.2% per annum over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's encouraging to see that Orell Füssli has been growing its earnings per share at 56% a year over the past five years. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.
Orell Füssli Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Orell Füssli is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The distributions are easily covered by earnings, and there is plenty of cash being generated as well. If earnings do fall over the next 12 months, the dividend could be buffeted a little bit, but we don't think it should cause too much of a problem in the long term. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Orell Füssli that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
