Do Logistec's (TSE:LGT.B) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Logistec (TSE:LGT.B). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Logistec Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Logistec managed to grow EPS by 9.0% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Unfortunately, Logistec's revenue dropped 5.7% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 4.2% to 8.5%. That falls short of ideal.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Logistec's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.

Are Logistec Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

We haven't seen any insiders selling Logistec shares, in the last year. With that in mind, it's heartening that Luc Villeneuve, the Independent Director of the company, paid CA$28k for shares at around CA$25.25 each.

Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Logistec is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. To be specific, they have CA$19m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 4.1% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.

Does Logistec Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Logistec is that it is growing profits. On top of that, we've seen insiders buying shares even though they already own plenty. To me, that all makes it well worth a spot on your watchlist, as well as continuing research. Don't forget that there may still be risks. For instance, we've identified 1 warning sign for Logistec that you should be aware of.

The good news is that Logistec is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
