Here's Why I Think Gatekeeper Systems (CVE:GSI) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Gatekeeper Systems (CVE:GSI), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Gatekeeper Systems's Improving Profits
In a capitalist society capital chases profits, and that means share prices tend rise with earnings per share (EPS). So like the hint of a smile on a face that I love, growing EPS generally makes me look twice. It is therefore awe-striking that Gatekeeper Systems's EPS went from CA$0.0044 to CA$0.043 in just one year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company. But the key is discerning whether something profound has changed, or if this is a just a one-off boost.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Gatekeeper Systems shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 2.5% to 11%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Gatekeeper Systems isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of CA$80m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are Gatekeeper Systems Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
Any way you look at it Gatekeeper Systems shareholders can gain quiet confidence from the fact that insiders shelled out CA$529k to buy stock, over the last year. And when you consider that there was no insider selling, you can understand why shareholders might believe that lady luck will grace this business. We also note that it was the Founder, Douglas Dyment, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying CA$522k for shares at about CA$0.18 each.
