It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like FirstService (TSE:FSV). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is FirstService Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Shareholders will be happy to know that FirstService's EPS has grown 29% each year, compound, over three years. So it's not surprising to see the company trades on a very high multiple of (past) earnings.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. FirstService maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 19% to US$4.1b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are FirstService Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a CA$9.2b company like FirstService. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$761m. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.

Is FirstService Worth Keeping An Eye On?

If you believe that share price follows earnings per share you should definitely be delving further into FirstService's strong EPS growth. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in FirstService's continuing strength. On the balance of its merits, solid EPS growth and company insiders who are aligned with the shareholders would indicate a business that is worthy of further research. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for FirstService (1 is concerning!) that you need to be mindful of.
