1933 Industries Inc. (CSE:TGIF) Soars 100% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward

1933 Industries Inc. (CSE:TGIF) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 100% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 33% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that 1933 Industries' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Pharmaceuticals industry in Canada, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has 1933 Industries Performed Recently?

The recent revenue growth at 1933 Industries would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. Perhaps the expectation moving forward is that the revenue growth will track in line with the wider industry for the near term, which has kept the P/S subdued. If not, then at least existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like 1933 Industries' is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 2.6% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 55% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 4.5% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

In light of this, it's curious that 1933 Industries' P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What We Can Learn From 1933 Industries' P/S?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now 1933 Industries' P/S is back within range of the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We didn't quite envision 1933 Industries' P/S sitting in line with the wider industry, considering the revenue growth over the last three-year is higher than the current industry outlook. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
