A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Luca Mining Corp.'s (CVE:LUCA) 27% Share Price Climb

Luca Mining Corp. (CVE:LUCA) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 7.1% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Luca Mining's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Metals and Mining industry in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.4x and even P/S above 14x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Luca Mining's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times have been advantageous for Luca Mining as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Luca Mining's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Luca Mining's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 11% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, even though the last 12 month performance was only fair. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 143% as estimated by the lone analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 8.6%, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Luca Mining's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Final Word

Despite Luca Mining's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

To us, it seems Luca Mining currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
