SSR Mining Inc. (TSE:SSRM) Stock Catapults 30% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Despite an already strong run, SSR Mining Inc. (TSE:SSRM) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 30% in the last thirty days. The last month tops off a massive increase of 119% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, SSR Mining may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 3.1x and even P/S higher than 26x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has SSR Mining Performed Recently?

SSR Mining hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is SSR Mining's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like SSR Mining's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 16% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 24% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 14% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 26% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that SSR Mining's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

SSR Mining's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of SSR Mining's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
