Whitecap Resources Inc. (TSE:WCP) Goes Ex-Dividend Soon

Whitecap Resources Inc. (TSE:WCP) stock is about to trade ex-dividend in two days. The ex-dividend date occurs one day before the record date, which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Accordingly, Whitecap Resources investors that purchase the stock on or after the 31st of October will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 17th of November.

The company's next dividend payment will be CA$0.0608 per share. Last year, in total, the company distributed CA$0.73 to shareholders. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Whitecap Resources has a trailing yield of 6.9% on the current stock price of CA$10.64. Dividends are a major contributor to investment returns for long term holders, but only if the dividend continues to be paid. That's why we should always check whether the dividend payments appear sustainable, and if the company is growing.

Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. Whitecap Resources paid out 67% of its earnings to investors last year, a normal payout level for most businesses. Yet cash flows are even more important than profits for assessing a dividend, so we need to see if the company generated enough cash to pay its distribution. The company paid out 94% of its free cash flow over the last year, which we think is outside the ideal range for most businesses. Companies usually need cash more than they need earnings - expenses don't pay themselves - so it's not great to see it paying out so much of its cash flow.

Whitecap Resources paid out less in dividends than it reported in profits, but unfortunately it didn't generate enough cash to cover the dividend. Cash is king, as they say, and were Whitecap Resources to repeatedly pay dividends that aren't well covered by cashflow, we would consider this a warning sign.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Stocks in companies that generate sustainable earnings growth often make the best dividend prospects, as it is easier to lift the dividend when earnings are rising. Investors love dividends, so if earnings fall and the dividend is reduced, expect a stock to be sold off heavily at the same time. That's why it's comforting to see Whitecap Resources's earnings have been skyrocketing, up 21% per annum for the past five years. Earnings have been growing quickly, but we're concerned dividend payments consumed most of the company's cash flow over the past year.

Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. Whitecap Resources's dividend payments are effectively flat on where they were 10 years ago.

The Bottom Line

Should investors buy Whitecap Resources for the upcoming dividend? The best dividend stocks typically boast a long history of growing earnings per share (EPS) via a combination of earnings growth and buybacks. That's why we're glad to see Whitecap Resources growing its EPS, buying back stock and paying out a reasonable percentage of its earnings as dividends. However, we note with some concern that it paid out 94% of its free cash flow last year, which is uncomfortably high and makes us wonder why the company chose to spend even more cash on buybacks. Overall, it's hard to get excited about Whitecap Resources from a dividend perspective.

With that being said, if dividends aren't your biggest concern with Whitecap Resources, you should know about the other risks facing this business. For example, we've found 2 warning signs for Whitecap Resources (1 is potentially serious!) that deserve your attention before investing in the shares.
