Earnings Not Telling The Story For TerraVest Industries Inc. (TSE:TVK) After Shares Rise 26%
TerraVest Industries Inc. (TSE:TVK) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 33% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies in Canada have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 16x, you may consider TerraVest Industries as a stock to avoid entirely with its 38.4x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, TerraVest Industries has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is TerraVest Industries' Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as TerraVest Industries' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 25%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 58% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 28% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 23%.
With this information, we find it concerning that TerraVest Industries is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining earnings are likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On TerraVest Industries' P/E
Shares in TerraVest Industries have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that TerraVest Industries currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E for a company whose earnings are forecast to decline. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings are highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
