Shareholders of goeasy (TSE:GSY) Must Be Delighted With Their 490% Total Return
We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. While the best companies are hard to find, but they can generate massive returns over long periods. For example, the goeasy Ltd. (TSE:GSY) share price is up a whopping 420% in the last half decade, a handsome return for long term holders. If that doesn't get you thinking about long term investing, we don't know what will. On top of that, the share price is up 40% in about a quarter.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over half a decade, goeasy managed to grow its earnings per share at 30% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 39% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for goeasy the TSR over the last 5 years was 490%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that goeasy has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 42% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 43% per year, is even more impressive. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand goeasy better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that goeasy is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
