Here's Why I Think Canaccord Genuity Group (TSE:CF) Is An Interesting Stock

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Canaccord Genuity Group (TSE:CF). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Canaccord Genuity Group Growing?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Canaccord Genuity Group has grown EPS by 47% per year, over the last three years. While that sort of growth rate isn't sustainable for long, it certainly catches my attention; like a crow with a sparkly stone.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). I note that, last year, Canaccord Genuity Group's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. While we note Canaccord Genuity Group's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 37% to CA$1.6b. That's progress.

Are Canaccord Genuity Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Canaccord Genuity Group shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at CA$176m. Coming in at 14% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. Very encouraging.

Is Canaccord Genuity Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Canaccord Genuity Group's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So to my mind Canaccord Genuity Group is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies.
