Are Robust Financials Driving The Recent Rally In Loblaw Companies Limited's (TSE:L) Stock?
Loblaw Companies' (TSE:L) stock is up by a considerable 7.5% over the past month. Given that the market rewards strong financials in the long-term, we wonder if that is the case in this instance. Specifically, we decided to study Loblaw Companies' ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Simply put, it is used to assess the profitability of a company in relation to its equity capital.
How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Loblaw Companies is:
23% = CA$2.6b ÷ CA$11b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each CA$1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made CA$0.23 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
A Side By Side comparison of Loblaw Companies' Earnings Growth And 23% ROE
First thing first, we like that Loblaw Companies has an impressive ROE. Secondly, even when compared to the industry average of 15% the company's ROE is quite impressive. Probably as a result of this, Loblaw Companies was able to see a decent net income growth of 14% over the last five years.
As a next step, we compared Loblaw Companies' net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 2.8%.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Loblaw Companies is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is Loblaw Companies Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
Loblaw Companies has a healthy combination of a moderate three-year median payout ratio of 26% (or a retention ratio of 74%) and a respectable amount of growth in earnings as we saw above, meaning that the company has been making efficient use of its profits.
Additionally, Loblaw Companies has paid dividends over a period of at least ten years which means that the company is pretty serious about sharing its profits with shareholders. Upon studying the latest analysts' consensus data, we found that the company is expected to keep paying out approximately 25% of its profits over the next three years. Accordingly, forecasts suggest that Loblaw Companies' future ROE will be 21% which is again, similar to the current ROE.
Conclusion
On the whole, we feel that Loblaw Companies' performance has been quite good. Specifically, we like that the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits at a high rate of return. This of course has caused the company to see substantial growth in its earnings. That being so, a study of the latest analyst forecasts show that the company is expected to see a slowdown in its future earnings growth.
