Is RIWI (CVE:RIWI) Using Too Much Debt?

Legendary fund manager Li Lu (who Charlie Munger backed) once said, 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. Importantly, RIWI Corp. (CVE:RIWI) does carry debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

Why Does Debt Bring Risk?

Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. While that is not too common, we often do see indebted companies permanently diluting shareholders because lenders force them to raise capital at a distressed price. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

What Is RIWI's Net Debt?

You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of September 2025 RIWI had US$1.59m of debt, an increase on none, over one year. However, because it has a cash reserve of US$737.7k, its net debt is less, at about US$850.7k.

How Strong Is RIWI's Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that RIWI had liabilities of US$1.36m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$1.69m due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$737.7k and US$1.32m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total US$998.0k more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

Given RIWI has a market capitalization of US$5.62m, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But you can't view debt in total isolation; since RIWI will need earnings to service that debt. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.

Over 12 months, RIWI reported revenue of US$6.4m, which is a gain of 55%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. With any luck the company will be able to grow its way to profitability.

Caveat Emptor

While we can certainly appreciate RIWI's revenue growth, its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is not ideal. Indeed, it lost a very considerable US$919k at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. Quite frankly we think the balance sheet is far from match-fit, although it could be improved with time. However, it doesn't help that it burned through US$887k of cash over the last year. So in short it's a really risky stock. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. Case in point: We've spotted 4 warning signs for RIWI you should be aware of.
