BioRem Inc. (CVE:BRM) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 35% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 78% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think BioRem's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.6x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Canada is similar at about 14x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, BioRem has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Is There Some Growth For BioRem?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like BioRem's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 34% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 157% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 18% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.

With this information, we find it interesting that BioRem is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From BioRem's P/E?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now BioRem's P/E is also back up to the market median. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of BioRem revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
