GFL Environmental Insiders Sell CA$143m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
In the last year, many GFL Environmental Inc. (TSE:GFL) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

GFL Environmental Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Founder, Patrick Dovigi, sold CA$34m worth of shares at a price of CA$43.59 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of CA$65.65, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was 100% of Patrick Dovigi's holding.

GFL Environmental Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last three months saw significant insider selling at GFL Environmental. In total, insiders sold CA$39m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Does GFL Environmental Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. GFL Environmental insiders own 5.8% of the company, currently worth about CA$1.5b based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
