Is Now The Time To Put Localiza Rent a Car (BVMF:RENT3) On Your Watchlist?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Localiza Rent a Car (BVMF:RENT3). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Quickly Is Localiza Rent a Car Increasing Earnings Per Share?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Who among us would not applaud Localiza Rent a Car's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 39%, compound, over the last three years? That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Localiza Rent a Car shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 14% to 22%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Localiza Rent a Car Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Localiza Rent a Car has a market capitalization of R$44b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth R$9.1b. That equates to 21% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Very encouraging.

Should You Add Localiza Rent a Car To Your Watchlist?

Localiza Rent a Car's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Localiza Rent a Car for a spot on your watchlist.
